What is the Area Plan on Aging?
With more than 50 years of experience as the designated Area Agency on Aging for an eight-county region, DRCOG offers a wide range of services to meet the needs of older adults and individuals living with disabilities in Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Clear Creek, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson, and Gilpin counties.
According to the Older Americans Act, the Area Agency on Aging must create an Area Plan on Aging that sets priorities and objectives for services. The Colorado State Unit on Aging mandates that agencies in Colorado develop a four-year plan and adhere to federal guidelines. Staff are tasked with focusing services on specific groups of older adults: those facing significant economic and social challenges, low-income minorities, individuals with limited English skills, frail seniors, and those living in rural regions. The plan needs to detail how services will be directed towards these groups.
In developing the Area Plan on Aging, staff actively seek public input to identify regional needs and priorities, reaching out at least a year before the plan is updated to ensure ample time for community involvement. The findings are shared with the public at various events across the service area.
